A PUB safety scheme has joined forces with drinks giant Diageo to launch its inaugural UK-wide awards scheme.
Launched at the annual National Pubwatch conference, the Diageo National Pubwatch awards aim to encourage and recognise safer social drinking environments in licensed premises throughout the UK.
The awards will be judged by the National Pubwatch committee, which will look for evidence that applicants have been effective in promoting social responsibility through the introduction of local initiatives. Three awards will be presented at the All Party Parliamentary Beer Group dinner in London on May 16.
National Pubwatch chairman Steve Baker said the launch of the awards programme was testament to the organisation’s achievements in the past 14 years.
“We want to celebrate nationally the good work that is taking place locally across the UK,” he said. “With the support of Diageo GB we are able to further spread the word of this important work.”
Mark Baird, head of industry affairs and alcohol policy at Diageo GB, said the firm “prides itself in supporting the on-trade night time economy”.
“We are delighted to become involved with National Pubwatch and support the great work it does up and down the country in promoting social responsibility,” he said.
“These new awards give us the opportunity to recognise excellence in the sector at a time when schemes such as Pubwatch are more important than ever.”
