Stars rise in east

LIFE in the pub trade may not be a bed of roses these days, but a husband and wife team in the east end of Glasgow are showing it can still be profitable – and fun.

In an interview with SLTN this issue, as part of our New Year New Career feature, Iain and Katie McLaren explain why they’ve not looked back since leasing The Kimberley Tavern in Tollcross Road in October 2010.
The couple, who signed a five-year lease with Scottish & Newcastle Pub Company, are attracting custom locally and from further afield as they bid to bring a touch of the city centre service to the east end.
Iain admits it’s not been plain sailing, but is convinced operators who invest in “time, training, entertainment and involvement in the community” can reap the rewards.
