AN Edinburgh waiter has set off on an epic 6500-mile charity cycle to Kenya.
Jonny Stevenson, who works at Tempus in the George Hotel, will travel on only two planes and two ferries during the journey, which will take him through Holland, Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Turkey, Egypt, Ethiopia and then south to Kenya.
The George Hotel bought Jonny’s cycling equipment and has sponsored him for the four-month challenge, which will raise money for the DARE (Develop Assistance Rural Enterprise) foundation.
“We were more than happy to sponsor Jonny to cycle to Kenya for such a worthwhile cause,” said George Hotel general manager David Welch. “It is an enormous challenge and, for someone who spends his days talking to people, I don’t know how he will manage with such a solo effort!”
Jonny said this is his first charity cycle.
“I’ve been training for months and cycling 70 miles per week to ensure I’m prepared for the challenge,” he added.
