THE former office of one Glasgow’s first newspapers has been converted into a new bar and restaurant by DRG (Di Maggio’s Restaurant Group).

The restored A1 listed building on the city’s St Vincent Place was purpose built in 1889 to house newspaper the Glasgow Citizen and evening edition the Evening Citizen.

The new Citizen Bar and Dining Rooms pays tribute to the now defunct titles, which ceased production in 1974.

The 218-seat bar and dining room serves what’s described as “classic fayre” over brunch, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner. There is also a private dining room, and the venue has become the first bar in the country to serve Tennent’s Tank Lager – a ‘brewery-fresh’ version of Tennent’s Lager that is stored and served from giant copper tanks behind the bar.

Tony Conetta, DRG director, said: “This project has been hugely enjoyable because it has uncovered incredible stories about the city and its people.

“From a public call-out for information on the Citizen newspaper, we’ve been inundated with fascinating tales, original photography and personal recounts. We’re really excited to showcase these stories, the workmanship and the artistry that has gone into both the decor and menus, all of which pay homage to Glasgow and her citizens.”

The venue will also be the first bar in the country to serve Tennent’s Tank Lager for over two decades.

“The lager will be served ‘brewery fresh’ from copper tanks behind The Citizen’s bar.

Master brewer at Tennent’s, Keith Lugton, said: “We’ve been lucky enough to have seen the development of The Citizen over the last few months and it’s going to be an amazing new addition to Glasgow’s bar and restaurant scene.

“It’s also exciting to be launching our first Tennent’s Tank Lager since the ‘80s in this bar where drinkers will be served the freshest pints of Scotland’s best selling lager.”

The Citizen is DRG’s 19th outlet in Scotland.
