Fair coffee for trade

HONDURAN coffee roaster Omar Rodriguez has crossed the Atlantic to visit Glasgow-based Matthew Algie for the first time, where he outlined the firm’s Fairtrade credentials.

Coffee from the Capucas co-op is used in a number of Matthew Algie blends and Rodriguez said sales of his farms’ produce in the UK have been helping build resources for his community. A portion of the cash raised from selling Capucas coffee to Matthew Algie is used to fund facilities in the rural town, including a virtual university.
“The people here in the UK and Scotland, when they buy [our] coffee from Matthew Algie they are supporting all these programmes,” said Rodriguez.
“Many things like healthcare, support programmes with kids, training for young people and training for growers.”
