A NEW lightweight bottle for Beck’s is being tipped to save 2500 tonnes of glass and cut CO2 emissions by 2000 tonnes this year.
Brewer AB InBev said the 275ml bottle for Beck’s and Beck’s Blue is 11% (20g), lighter than the previous design.
The firm estimates the changes will effect some 130 million bottles in 2013, saving 2642 tonnes of glass and removing 1940 tonnes of CO2 from the manufacturing process over the next 12 months.
Inge Plochaet, president of AB InBev UK & Ireland, said the new bottle is one of a number of ways the brewer aims to improve its environmental performance.
“At AB InBev UK we work closely with our partners in the industry to reduce the impact of our operations on the environment,” she said.
“It’s why our flagship brand Stella Artois was the UK’s first alcohol brand to sign up to the Courtauld Commitment [responsibility deal aimed at reducing the carbon and wider environmental impact of the grocery retail sector] in 2010 and why all of our UK brands are now signatories to Phase 2 of the commitment.”
